What a lab-grown diamond is

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond: pure carbon, with the same hardness, fire and brilliance as a diamond mined from the earth. It is grown in a laboratory, either by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) or by high pressure, high temperature (HPHT). Without lab equipment, a jeweler cannot tell the two apart.

Lab-grown diamonds are graded on the same four Cs as natural ones: cut, colour, clarity and carat. Every certified stone comes with a report that records those grades and the method used to grow it.

Certified by IGI and GIA

The two major laboratories for lab-grown diamonds are IGI (International Gemological Institute) and GIA (Gemological Institute of America). How lab-grown diamonds are priced

A lab-grown diamond usually costs much less than a natural diamond of the same size and grades, because it can be produced to order rather than mined. Within lab-grown diamonds, price follows the same logic as natural stones. Cut quality, colour, clarity and carat weight move the price, and the jump between carat sizes is steep.

Lab-grown or natural?

Both are real diamonds, and we set both. Lab-grown gives you a larger or higher-graded stone for the same budget. A natural diamond is rarer and formed by nature, which matters to some buyers.
