Deposits and Repricing Clauses for Custom Jewelry Orders

A custom order commits you to metal and stones before the piece exists. Four short clauses protect that commitment.

When a client orders a custom piece, you commit money to metal, stones and labour before there is anything to hand over. A deposit and a few plain clauses make sure that commitment is shared. They also prevent most disagreements, because everyone read the rules at the start.

The deposit

Many jewelers take about half up front on custom work. Some ask for enough to cover the metal and stones. Pick a rule, apply it every time, and put it in writing on the order. A deposit confirms the order and covers the first costs you cannot recover.

Four clauses worth having

  1. Metal repricing. The metal portion of the price is held for a set time and then repriced to the current gold price. See our note on the 24-hour gold quote for the wording.
  2. Stone price and availability. A stone price is held only while the stone is held. If the stone sells or the supplier changes the price, the quote changes with it.
  3. Changes after approval. Once the design is approved for casting, changes are a new revision and may add cost and time.
  4. Balance and collection. The balance is due before the piece is released, and pieces left uncollected beyond a stated period may be treated according to your policy.

What to write on the order

A short block is enough: the price, the deposit paid, the date the metal price was set, how long it holds, and the approval steps agreed. Have your client sign or reply to confirm it.

A caution

Consumer protection laws differ by province and set limits on deposits, cancellations and refunds. Treat the clauses above as a starting point, and have a lawyer review your terms before you rely on them.
